“Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS)”

 

Work Report of Chinese Nutrition Society
(2004 to 2008)

This report covers the main activities conducted by The Sixth Council of Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS) during a period of 4 years, from October 2004 to October 2008. In the past 4 years, CNS has made notable progress in varies fields.

A. Organizations

The 6th Council of CNS was composed of 69 members, among them 23 were the member of The Standing Board, including President, 5 Vice-presidents, Secretary General and 3 deputies. Under the council there are 6 working committees and 7 branches of professional specialization. The membership of CNS has expanded rapidly in these 4 years, from about 8000 members in 2004 to 12640 members (including student members) in 2008.

B. Academic Activities

1. Various academic activities

CNS has led the multilevel academic activities in the form of conferences, symposiums, forums and seminars. In the 4 years, CNS has in total organized 55 academic meetings with 5233 participants, of 870 papers submitted and 19 proceedings printed (over 12600 copies). In addition to the regular academic conferences and symposiums as planned each year, CNS has also organized many discussions on newly arising specific topic concerning controversies, hot points and frontier issues in nutrition and health in China.

The academic activities were conducted with the direction of the current development of nutrition science, and focused on topics of popular interests, such as nutrition transition, nutrition and chronic diseases, nutrimental supplements and food policy and regulations. We have also invited a number of foreign experts from the United States,Japan, Australia, Germany, Vietnam and so on joining the discussions for a better exchange of experiences.

2. Nutrition Knowledge updating Classes
From 2004 to 2008, we have hosted 10 nutrition knowledge updating classes, focusing on the progress of research methodology, on public nutrition, on the recent development of clinical nutrition, on vitamins in chronic diseases prevention etc.

C. Nutrition Foundation and Awards

1. CNS Foundation of Nutrition Research

The foundation was set for promoting nutrition research in China, 2 million RMB yuan was provided per year (a donation of a Chinese company) to support 10 to 20 research projects. In 5 years, from the year 2003 when the foundation was established to the year 2007, 606 proposals had been received from research institutes, colleges, hospitals and disease control and prevention centers throughout the country, 54 of them were funded.

2.CNS Awards of Nutrition Science and Technology

In the year 2006 and 2008, CNS awarded 2 rounds of prize respectively to 15 research projects which made outstanding achievements in nutritional science and technology, including 2 first-class prizes, 3 second-class prizes and 10 third-class prizes. The projects which won the 1st-class prize were “The 4th nationwide nutrition and health survey” conducted by Professor XG Yang and “Studies on nutritional measures for improving brain function and their mechanism under stress” conducted by Professor YY Cheng. The 2nd -class prize went to projects: “Studies on methodology of food component analysis and their application”; “Studies on effects of anti-oxidation, anti-DNA damage and preventing birth defects of some vitamins”; “Serial Studies on calcium adequate intake and osteoporosis prevention of females in three specific periods of their life”. The 3rd-class awards recognized 10 projects such as “Policy research for prevention and control of major micronutrient deficiency in children”, “Studies on the roles of some dietary components in adjusting cell function and tumor prevention” etc.

D. Popularization of Nutrition Knowledge

1. CNS has organized multiform activities for popularization of nutrition and health knowledge, and made notable achievements. In cooperation with the news media and the provincial nutrition societies, CNS guide people to consume a more balanced diet and to establish a healthier eating habit. Since the issuance of the Dietary Guidance for Chinese Residents, the key persons of CSN had been interviewed by reporters of the popular newspapers, magazines, and radio/ TV station more than 60 times every year. They explained the Guidelines in connection with the practical dietary problems in China, and influenced strongly the attitude and practice of the spectators and audience. The similar activities were also conducted in many cities and towns in many provinces of the country.

2. At the same time, CNS brings nutrition knowledge to the countryside in connection with the nationwide program— “popularization of science and technology” lunched by the China Association of Science and Technology. Experts gave lectures and Q&A in public. It emphasized the nutrition and health problems in remote, poor rural areas. In addition, CNS has organized a training class annually for the nutrition professionals to updating their knowledge.

E. International Academic Activities

The CNS, in these 4 years, has arranged many international academic activities including bilateral, multilateral meetings, taking part in international conferences and visiting to each other of foreign counterparts and so on.

1. Participate in international conferences

1/ The CNS delegates attended the 18th International Congress of Nutrition in Durban, South African, in August 19-23, 2005, where Chinese scholars submitted 20 research papers and 5 were presented orally. Prof. Keyou Ge, the President of CNS chaired a session entitled “Nutrition and Chronic Diseases in China” where 7 papers presented focused on nutrition transition and chronic diseases in China.
2/ In 2006, CNS hosted jointly the 5th Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society Conference (5th APCNSC)at Zhejiang University. President Keyou Ge made a speech on behalf of CNS at the opening ceremony, and 6 speakers from CNS presented their papers at the meeting.
3/ In September 2008, the key persons of CNS attended the 15th International Conference of Dietician in Japan and presented papers on Recent Nutrition Works and The Current Status of Food Labeling in China. The CNS group, taking this opportunity, had a discussion with the President and the Secretary General of International Confederation of Dietetic Associations (ICDA) about the possibility of CNS joining ICDA as a full member.

In addition, CNS and IUNS jointly conducted the first Leadership Training and Capacity Building Program in China in June 2008, a total of 44 students recommended by provincial and municipal nutrition societies, including 6 from Taiwan, attended the training course.

2. Reception of Foreign visitors
From 2004 to 2008, CNS has received 6 international delegations and a total of about 160 visitors came from the United States, Australia, Vietnam and Japan and so on. Experts from various countries changed information and views with CNS people, about the existing nutrition problems, authentication of nutritionist training, nutrition survey, dietary guidelines, and also the experiences in using traditional herbal medicine to protect people from diseases. The possibility of further cooperation had been discussed as well.

F. Undertaking tasks Assigned by the Government

1. Preparation the draft of the “Regulations for Better Nutrition of Chinese Population”
Entrusted by Ministry of Health, CNS had been drafting of the “Regulations for Better Nutrition of Chinese Population” continuously in these 4 years. The final version of the “Regulations” was completed in 2008, and submitted to the Ministry of Health for further appraisal.

2. Revision the “Dietary Guidelines and Food Guide Pagoda for Chinese Residents”
In view of the fact that the food consumption has changed considerably in this decade, a through revision of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines and Food Guide Pagoda was taking place in 2007 with the support of the Ministry of Health. A new version of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines was promulgated by the Ministry of Health in January 2008. It consists of the guidelines for general population, Guidelines for specific population groups and the Food Guide pagoda.

3. Publish of “The History of Chinese Nutrition Society”

Answering the call of the China Association of Science and Technology, the CNS compiled “The History of Chinese Nutrition Society” in 2008. It describe from the very early stage of the formulation of a nutrition professional group in 1930s in combination with the development of modern nutrition science in China till 2008. It includes the organization, the activities, the publications and the prominent nutritionists in China.
