Summary Report of the fifth council (2000-2004)Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS)The fifth council of CNS was elected by the fifth national member congress in October 2000, including 68 members. The standing council was consisted of 19 members, and Professor Keyou Ge was selected as the President, Professor Zhai Fenging as the Secretary General. Part I. Work in the four yearsI: Organization and managementThe fifth council strengthened the collective leadership of the national member congress, the council and the standing council. Work meetings were held more regularly of these leading bodies in these 4 years. The regulations of the CNS were revised following the principle of the documents of the 6th National Congress of Science and Technology, China. CNS now has 7693 members, 12 collective members and 22 first-class local societies. Five working committees and seven special professional branches were established. An expert database was constructed, and many of these people have been invited to participate in various works of CNS, such as evaluation, awarding and education, etc. II. Academic activityFor the last four years, 14 academic meetings and 5 special topic forums were held. Most of them had a nation-wide participation. Donated by the Giant Investment Cooperation, the Nutrition Research Fund of CNS was set up in the beginning of 2003, and will last for 5 years as the first phase. The nutrition knowledge updating courses were held in every year, to study the updated knowledge on selected topics. “An Overview of Nutrition Science” was compelled in Chinese; more than one hundred authors had been involved in for 3 years. "Acta Nutrimenta Sinica", an academic journal published by CNS, was awarded “the 2nd top 100 famous journals of China” prize. The influence factor of the journal is 0.749, which ranks the third of all journals in the field of preventive medicine published in China. In order to encourage the nutrition scientist who had made great contribution to nutrition science, the CNS decided to set up “Science and Technology Prize of CNS”. This was approved by the government in 2004. III. Work entrusted by the governmentA group of well known scientists appealed to the government for nutrition legislation at the Xiangshan science meeting in April, 2002. Then overtures in this regard were submitted to the people’s congress in 2003 and 2004. Premier Wen Jiabao instructed: the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council “to study the case”, and the CNS has been entrusted to do the preparation and drafting a nutrition regulations to be deliberation by the government. Now, the preparatory works are on the way. In addition, the CNS has been involved in works such as the national examination for the qualification of professionals in nutrition, the national medium- to long-range program for scientific and technological development etc. IV. Nutrition knowledge popularizationThe CNS made active efforts in mass education. In cooperation with the local nutrition societies, knowledge popularization has been carried out extensively in various part of the country. The core was to popularize the food based dietary guidelines. Multi-measures have been used where appropriate including expert lectures, training course, TV programs, newspaper, magazine and nutrition knowledge CD, etc. Thus, the CNS was awarded “National Advanced collectivity on scientific knowledge Popularization” by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Propaganda Department of Central Committee of Communist Party of China in the year 2002, and “Advanced prize on science and technology popularization” by Chinese Science and Technology Society in 2003. V. International Academic activitiesThe CNS had organized about 30 experts to attend the 17th International Nutrition Congress in Vienna in the year 2001, and Professor Keyou Ge was elected as the council member of IUNS. We also organized a team to take part in the 9th Asia Congress of Nutrition in New Delhi in 2003; Professor Ge was invited to make a plenary presentation. VI. Technological supporting to the poor areasAnswer the call of the China Association for Science and Technology to support the development of the poor areas, the CNS donated six computers to six counties of Yuliang area of Shanxi in August of 2003, and also donated “dietary guideline and pagoda of Chinese population” brochure and wall map for five counties of Guang’an city in May, 2004. VII. Technological exploitationsThree technology transfers were carried out in this term, including a nutrients supplement, a functional drinking and a health food product. The “gold partner”, a product of vitamins and minerals compound developed by CNS, had come into market at the end of 2002. The income of these transfers supported strongly the academic activities and mass education of CNS.
Part II. The future tasksThe past four years was a rapid growing period for the CNS. The next council should keep the spirit of the 6th congress of China Association for Science and Technology, to fulfill the even harder tasks. I. Doing what we can to answer the government’s call for reserving the problems of agriculture, countryside and farmers, especially in the west region. II. Making better use of the nutrition research funds and the nutrition award funds of CNS, push forward the nutritional research in China. III Expanding and enhancing the propaganda of the food based dietary guidelines and Chinese food pagoda, to improve the nutrition and health status of population. . IV. Performing the nutrition legislation, qualifications accreditation and certification of nutritionist as entrusted by the government. V. Making a better use of the modern information technology to strengthen communication among nutrition workers around China. VI. Trying to serve better internationally, applying to host the 20th International Congress Nutrition in 2013.
Part III. The 6th CouncilThe sixth council of CNS was elected by the 6th national member congress in October 2004, including 79 members. The standing council was consisted of 21members, and Professor Keyou Ge and Professor Fenging Zhai were re-elected as the President and the Secretary General.
