"The
Korean Nutrition Society"
The Korean Nutrition Society (KNS) is
the premier nutrition research society in Korea founded in 1967. Currently it
has 850+ members including nutritionists, physicians, dieticians, food chemists,
and food technologists. KNS is a member of The Korea Research Foundation and The
Korean Federation of Sciences & Technology Societies as well as The Federation
of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS) and International Union of Nutritional
Sciences (IUNS). The main goal of KNS is to provide and to share the latest
scientific nutrition information and findings among members. The promotion of
national health status by nutrition intervention is another side of the goal.

Special Committees:
1. Committee of Dietary Reference
Intakes for Korean: established KDRI (Korean Dietary Reference Intakes) by
proposing the nutrient intakes that are considered necessary for the prevention
of nutritional diseases caused by nutritional deficit or excess.
2. Committee for Education and
Training of KDRIs: developing educational materials and education and
dissemination of the information about the newly released KDRIs.
3. Committee for Nutritional
Information: updated the CAN (Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program)
version 3.0 which has been used for the assessment of dietary intakes for
professional use.
4. Committee on Nutrition Policy:
working for establishment of sound policy to improve diet and to reduce
noncommunicable diseases based on up to date scientific knowledge.
5. Committee for Terminology: working
for standardization of Korean Terminologies in the field of nutrition.
6. Committee for Biofoods and
Functional Foods for Health: finding the new functional materials, evaluating
the functionality and safety, and establishing the standard requirement on
biofood.
7. Committee for Promotion of English
Journal in International Scientific Community: Working toward publication and
promotion of English journal (Nutrition Research and Practice) by joint effort
with other nutritional societies.
8. Committee for Nutrigenomics:
taking a research on nutrition and gene interaction to improve health and
longevity through individualized nutrition
9. Committee for Management of Food
Service and Commercial Dining Service: evaluating the nutritional balance and
safety in meal service and commercial dining services.

 | Dr. Namsoo Chang was appointed as
the president of the Korean Nutrition Society during January 1, 2007 ~ Dec.
31, 2007. |
 | Dr. Hee Young Paik was elected to
be a Council member of International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS) at
the 18th International Congress of Nutrition held in Durban, and
will serve for 4 years. |
 | Publishes two Journals regularly -
one in Korean and the other in English language. The Journal has over 1,000
subscribed readers in Korea and abroad. |
 | DRIs committee has been working
for developing of KDRI since July, 2003. KDRIs had been released in November,
2005 |
 | Terminology committee has been
working for the standardization of Korean terminologies in the field of
nutrition since January, 2004.

KDRIs is Dietary
Reference Intakes for Koreans. It is new system of Dietary recommendations
consisting of EAR (Estimated Average Requirements), RI (Recommended
Intake), AI (Average Intake), UL (Tolerable Upper Intake Level)
The 7th Recommended Dietary Allowances for Koreans.(2000)
Recommended
Dietary Allowances for Koreans first established in 1962, updated every 5
years. The latest (7th) version of RDA was published in 2000 by
KNS.
CAN- Pro 3.0 (2006)
CAN-Pro 3.0 for
professional and general use are available for easy and precise nutrition
management, consulting, education, and research.
Nutrient Composition Tables for Foods and Menu.(1998)
Include nutrient
database of 3,000 commonly consumed Korean foods and 1,800 menus
Present Knowledge in Nutrition, 8th Edition. (2002)
Published the
Korean version of Present Knowledge in Nutrition (PKN), a major nutrition
book containing the most recent information.
Nutrition Glossary(2006)
Nutrition
Glossary is a English -Korean translation guide in Nutrition terms which
has been chosen for its usefulness to meet the ongoing needs of those in
nutrition and allied health professions, food science, biochemistry,
physiology, medical science, cookery science.
