2007-2008 Activities

In 2007 a communication was received on the IUNS concerns about new WHO development in its Nutrition Division. In 2008 communciations were received, including the Draft program for ICN 2009 and IUNS Summary Report to the International Nutrition Community (March, 2008); IUNS statement of Cash Receipts and Disbursements for the year ended December 31, 2007 (May 2008); Standing Committee on Nutrition – Steering Committee Minutes (August 1008).

The usual activities of the New Zealand Nutrition Societies for the 2007 – 2008 year are listed below.

The first joint annual scientific meeting of Nutrition Society of Australia and Nutrition Society of New Zealand was held in 2006 in Sydney, Australia. A memorandum of understanding has since been prepared for the organization of these joint meetings, which will be held every two years alternating between Australia and New Zealand.

In 2007 a Joint Annual Scientific Meeting of the Nutrition Society of New Zealand  and the Nutrition Society of Australia was held at Massey University, Albany campus, Auckland, 4-7 December 2007. The theme of the conference was ‘Is the Quest for the Idyllic Lifestyle Killing Us’.

In 2008 the Nutrition Society of New Zealand Conference, ‘To Eat or Not to Eat’, was held in Chrischurch, New Zealand, 9-10 December.

The 2009 Joint Annual Scientific Meeting of the Nutrition Society of Australia Inc: and the Nutrition Society of New Zealand, ‘Nutrition in the 21st Century’, will be held in Newcastle, Australia, 8-11 December, 2009.

In 2007,  New Zealand Dietetic Association Conference, Up, Up, and Away: Achieving New Heights in Dietetic Practice’, was held in Christchurch, New Zealand, 3-5 September.

In 2008 , New Zealand Dietetic Association Conference, ‘Bridging the Gaps’, was held in Hamilton, New Zealand, 1-3 September.

The 2009 New Zealand Dietetic Association Conference, ‘Growing Into the Future’, will be held in Napier, New Zealand, 9-11 September.

Other nutrition activities in New Zealand include:

The New Zealand Adult Nutrition Survey 2008/09 is underway. It will provide information on food and nutrient intakes, body measurements and blood test results of a representative sample of adults (5,700) aged from 15 years and above. The survey is being carried out by LINZ Nutrition and Activity Unit. Department of Human Nutrition, University of Otago with input from Massey University and Auckland University, in partnership with the Ministry of Health who are funding the project.

Healthy Eating - Healthy Action (HEHA) is the Ministry of Health’s strategic approach to improving health for all New Zealanders. A number of national and regional initiatives are working towards the HEHA health priorities of improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, and reducing obesity.

ANA Agencies for Nutrition Action (which includes the NZ Dietetic Association), whose mission is to work co-operatively with relevant sectors to help New Zealanders improve nutrition, increase physical activityand reduce obesity, continues to promote  these goals through annual conferences, regional forums, newsletters, Fono, National Hui and media releases

Members of the New Zealand adhering body are looking forward to the 19th International Congress of Nutrition 2009, Nutrition Security for All, in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2009. There will be a good representation of members from New Zealand.
