Email: beateluk@yahoo.com 2.0 National SecretariatDepartment of Human Nutrition 3.0 Term of NSN council Membership2003-2004 4.0 Year Established1963 5.0 ConsultancyProfessor I O Akinyele served as the UNICEF consultant to the National Committee on Food and Nutrition in 2003 to harmonize existing sectoral, NGOs, Private Organizations and International agencies work plans on Food and Nutrition in Nigeria. The harmonization was done in line with the Food and Nutrition Policy for Nigeria. Prof Akinyele as part of his TOR developed the Road map and facilitated the working group which developed and finalized the National Plan of Action for Nutrition in Nigeria launched in May2004 Professor Akinyele served as the UNICEF Consultant to the National Fortification Alliance and its focal point the Nutrition Division of the Federal Minister of Health to develop the proposal from Nigeria to the Global Alliance for Nutrition Improvement (GAIN) .the proposal was submitted for the third Round in 2004 and Nigeria was one of the Countries which has been approved for GAIN support. 6.0 Activities2003 1. Recruitment of new individual members and student members to advance the cause of nutrition in Nigeria 2. Set up a Constitution review Committee whose report was debated and adopted at an extraordinary general meeting which produced the current constitution for the Society 3. Dr I A Onimawo Vice President, Dr Ngozi Nnam General Secretary and Dr B D Omotola the Assistant General Secretary participated in the working group which developed the National Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition in Nigeria. 4. 34th Annual Conference and Scientific Meeting of the Society was held from November 26-30 with the theme Child survival and the Right to Adequate Nutrition 5. Annual general meeting approved the proposal by the President Prof I O Akinyele to set up a National Institute for Food and Nutrition to promote research, training and capacity development for nutritionists in Nigeria for national development. A committee was set up thereafter to work out the details of the proposal and report to the 2004 AGM . 2004 1. Held a one day symposium on April 15 2004 in Ibadan to discuss Nutrition as a Profession and its implications for development in Nigeria 2. Hosted the Vice President of IUNS Professor Philip James and his wife in October 2004.Professor James presented a Lecture on October 26 in Jos titled: The Nutrition Transition: Can Africa escape the scourge of Urban Malnutrition? This was part of the Annual conference of the Society 3. Convened the 35th Annual Conference and Scientific Meeting of the Society with the Theme: Urban malnutrition in Nigeria and the Millenium Development Goals :A Time to Act October 26-30 2004 Jos Plateau State 4. Annual general meeting received the report of the Committee set up on the Institute and approved the implementation of their recommendations by Council, to begin the establishment of the Institute immediately. 5. Annual general meeting also discussed and took decisions on the process and criteria to nominate Nigerian candidates for the IUNS Elections in Durban 2005 6.
